Ethan Ampadu demands more as Leeds United launch Premier League preparations
Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu says the club have already shifted their attention to the challenge of life back in the Premier League as preparations for the 2026/27 campaign officially begin.
The Whites returned from their summer break this week, with players reporting to Leeds Beckett University for fitness assessments and conditioning work before the start of full pre-season training.
Ampadu was among those reunited with teammates and coaching staff, marking the first step in Leeds’ build-up to their long-awaited return to the English top flight. While pre-season is known for its demanding running sessions, the Ghana-linked midfielder believes the hard work now will provide the foundation for the season ahead.
No room for complacency
Speaking to LUTV, Ampadu admitted it was refreshing to be back with the squad after the off-season but stressed that last season’s achievements must now serve as motivation rather than a reason to relax.
“It’s good to be back, I feel good and well rested,” Ampadu began.
The 25-year-old explained that although the squad can take pride in what they accomplished during their promotion-winning campaign, maintaining high standards remains the priority.
“I think it’s good to reflect at the end of the season to see how far we have come and see what we’ve achieved. But also, I think as professionals we always set our standards so high.
“It’s one of those where you reflect, but you also want to build. So, it’s finding that right balance to appreciate what you’ve done and the hard work that got you there, but to also know what to do next.”
Eyes firmly on the Premier League
Ampadu’s message reflects the mindset within the Leeds camp as Daniel Farke’s side begin the physical and tactical work required for the demands of Premier League football.
The opening week of pre-season is centred on rebuilding fitness after the summer break, with conditioning sessions designed to prepare the squad for the intensity of top-flight competition.
