Amine Gouiri’s remarkable Marseille numbers raise transfer dilemma

Amine Gouiri has emerged as one of Olympique de Marseille’s most effective attacking players, producing a goal contribution every 92 minutes since joining the club from Rennes.

The Algeria international has now recorded 31 goal contributions in 43 appearances for Marseille, establishing a remarkable level of consistency and giving the club a difficult decision to make over his future.

Among Marseille players since the beginning of the 21st century to have registered at least 20 attacking contributions, Gouiri has the best ratio when measured against playing time.

According to Transfermarkt data, the 26-year-old has either scored or assisted once every 92 minutes for OM. That places him ahead of several notable players who have represented the club at the Velodrome.

Mason Greenwood is next on the list, with a contribution every 101 minutes, followed by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at 104 minutes and Didier Drogba at 108. Arkadiusz Milik and Bafetimbi Gomis both recorded a contribution every 114 minutes.

Gouiri’s output is particularly striking given that Marseille paid about 19m euros to sign him from Rennes. Since arriving, he has quickly become one of the club’s most dependable attacking options, at a time when there are relatively few established certainties in the squad.

The Algeria forward underlined his importance immediately this season by scoring twice in Marseille’s Ligue 1 opening-day victory over Strasbourg. That display reinforced his status as one of the side’s principal sources of goals and assists as he continues an impressive 2026.

There are, however, growing questions over whether Marseille will be able to keep him.

Tottenham and Napoli have both been mentioned among the clubs interested in Gouiri. Marseille may also need to sell several more players before the transfer window closes in order to reduce its wage bill.

That financial pressure has created a serious sporting dilemma. Gouiri is one of the few players in the squad capable of delivering an immediate and regular attacking threat, while Bruno Genesio would like to retain some of the key figures in his team.

Marseille supporters have also made clear that they want Gouiri to stay. A transfer worth between 25m and 30m euros would provide a significant financial boost for the club, but his current form means the sporting cost of losing him could be even greater.

Gouiri’s progress is also notable because relatively few Algerian players have succeeded at Marseille. His record since moving from Rennes has placed him among the most productive attacking players of the modern era at the club, while making his position one of the main issues to resolve before the end of the transfer window.
