Monaco and United States striker Folarin Balogun has spoken for the first time about the controversy surrounding his suspension during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting that the situation created additional pressure for him and his team.

The forward was initially handed a one-match suspension after being sent off during the United States’ round-of-32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

However, FIFA later overturned the ban, allowing Balogun to feature in the last-16 clash against Belgium, a decision that sparked debate after US President Donald Trump revealed he had contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino regarding the punishment.

Balogun questions red card decision

Speaking to CBS, Balogun said he was surprised by the referee’s decision to dismiss him, insisting the incident was not a deliberate challenge.

“It wasn’t even a tackle, and that’s why I was completely shocked, and you can see that from my reaction. All I could do was accept the decision and try to be there to support my team.”

The striker explained that the dismissal came at a difficult moment for the team and increased the pressure on the United States during their World Cup campaign.

“When it is unintentional, it should never lead to a red card. It was just an unfortunate situation that put us under a lot of pressure.”

FIFA decision sparks debate

FIFA’s decision to suspend the punishment allowed Balogun to return for the knockout-stage encounter against Belgium, but the move attracted attention because of Trump’s reported involvement.

The incident placed the Monaco forward at the centre of a wider discussion involving football decisions, politics and the independence of sporting authorities.

Balogun, who is eligible to represent Nigeria through his heritage but chose the United States internationally, remains an important figure for the US national team as they continue their development on the global stage.
