World Cup 2026: Lamine Yamal hails Courtois ahead of Spain's blockbuster quarter-final against Belgium

Lamine Yamal has played down the pressure surrounding Spain’s World Cup semi-final showdown with France, insisting he remains confident ahead of one of the biggest matches of his young career.

The 19-year-old forward has been at the centre of attention throughout the tournament, with expectations growing around his performances as Spain chase their first World Cup title since 2010.

However, Yamal insists the noise surrounding his form and recent criticism will not affect his approach when Spain face France in a heavyweight semi-final clash.

The Barcelona star was recently urged by teammate Rodri to “calm down” and stop focusing too much on proving himself at the tournament. His comments came after Portugal coach Roberto Martinez claimed Spain’s young attacker had been successfully managed during their meeting.

“Lamine Yamal did not cause any problems for us,” Martinez said after Portugal’s tactical approach limited the teenager’s influence.

But Yamal insists such remarks do not concern him and says his priority remains helping Spain reach the final rather than chasing individual recognition.

Yamal unfazed by Martinez comments

Speaking ahead of the France encounter, Yamal dismissed the suggestion that Portugal’s approach or Martinez’s assessment had affected his confidence.

“No, because the Portugal coach talked about that (numerology) … and then Mikel Merino turned up! I’m not worried about scoring, all that matters is winning, but hopefully a goal comes tomorrow and it’s a great day. What I want as a present is a win,” Yamal said.

The youngster also rejected suggestions that he is feeling pressure on football’s biggest stage, highlighting that there are greater challenges beyond the sport.

“Pressure? No. There are much harder things in life than a football match. It’s a game, I know what I’m capable of and I’m not worried about anything,” he added.

Yamal believes Spain’s status as reigning European champions gives them confidence heading into the semi-final, insisting the team does not need to overcomplicate the occasion.

“I was asked if there was fear and I said no, obviously not: we’re European champions. We don’t have to talk too much, we know what we have to do.”

Teenage star embraces France challenge

Despite his age, Yamal has already become one of Spain’s most important attacking outlets, delivering key moments in major matches throughout his career.

The winger acknowledged the significance of performing on such a stage and welcomed the challenge of facing France.

“It’s special to (have) scored in games like this and of course I accept the challenge,” he said.

Yamal also appeared to respond to critics who believe he has not reached his best level during the tournament, joking that expectations should be lowered before the semi-final.

“You lot say I am not at my best level, so you don’t need to expect anything from me tomorrow. But I hope it will be a special day.”

Spain and France battle for final spot

The semi-final presents another major test for both nations, with France chasing history as they attempt to become only the third team to reach three consecutive World Cup finals.

Didier Deschamps’ side, champions in 2018 and runners-up in 2022, must overcome a talented Spain team that has impressed throughout the tournament and is seeking a second World Cup crown.

With Yamal leading Spain’s attack and France boasting one of the strongest squads in world football, the clash promises to be one of the defining moments of the competition.

For Yamal, the message is clear: the pressure can wait. The only target is victory.
