World Cup 2026: Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir reveals how he saved Messi’s penalty
Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir has opened up on the preparation and mindset behind his stunning penalty save against Lionel Messi during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the moment as one of the biggest challenges of his career.
Shobeir produced a memorable performance during Egypt’s dramatic Round of 16 clash against Argentina, denying the football icon from the spot to preserve the Pharaohs’ early advantage against the reigning world champions.
The goalkeeper’s heroics did not end with the penalty save, as he made several crucial stops in the opening half to keep Argentina’s attacking stars at bay and give Egypt hope of securing a historic result.
Reflecting on the match, Shobeir admitted facing Argentina was one of the most demanding experiences he has encountered.
“The Argentina match was the most difficult game for me,” Shobeir said, according to Pan Africa Football. “They are the world champions and have outstanding players. The first half was extremely difficult, and even now the match still affects us mentally.”
The goalkeeper insisted Egypt never lost belief during the contest but acknowledged that fatigue and lapses in concentration eventually affected their performance.
“We never felt we were going to lose, but fatigue and a lack of concentration in the closing stages had a big impact.”
Shobeir also revealed the detailed preparation that went into stopping Messi, explaining that he studied the Argentine captain’s penalty habits before the encounter.
“I studied the way Messi takes penalties. I knew he would look at me before striking the ball, but before he placed it down I noticed he wasn’t going to use his usual technique to come slowly.”
The Egyptian goalkeeper explained that he avoided making eye contact with Messi to remain calm and focused before the decisive moment.
“I never looked into his eyes because I didn’t want to put myself under any pressure. I stayed fully focused, and I’m very happy that I managed to save the penalty.”
Despite Egypt’s eventual elimination, Shobeir believes the team entered the match with genuine confidence after their impressive performances earlier in the tournament.
The Pharaohs had built momentum following a strong display against Belgium, a victory over New Zealand and a draw against Iran, giving them belief that they could overcome Argentina.
“Our ambitions were very high against Argentina after our performance against Belgium, the win over New Zealand and the draw with Iran,” he said.
Shobeir also expressed his belief that Egypt should have been awarded a penalty during the match, claiming Hamdy Fathy was denied a clear opportunity.
The emotional impact of the defeat was also evident after the final whistle, with the goalkeeper revealing the disappointment felt inside the dressing room.
“After the Argentina match, I entered the dressing room late and cried. I don’t like crying in front of anyone, but we all knew qualification was so close.”
Although Egypt’s World Cup journey ended at the hands of the champions, Shobeir’s penalty save against Messi will remain one of the tournament’s standout moments.
