Mofokeng reveals Broos’ advice after sealing move to Union Saint-Gilloise

South Africa international Relebohile Mofokeng has disclosed the advice he received from Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos after completing his high-profile transfer from Orlando Pirates to Belgian champions Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

The 21-year-old winger has secured a lucrative switch to the Belgian Pro League ahead of the 2026/27 season, ending months of speculation over his future.

Mofokeng had been linked with several clubs abroad but chose to remain at Orlando Pirates until helping the Buccaneers achieve their domestic ambitions. Throughout that period, Broos repeatedly voiced his belief that the talented youngster needed a move to Europe to continue his development.

Speaking on Metro FM, Mofokeng revealed that the national team coach fully supported his decision and encouraged him to make the most of the opportunity.

“I told him, and he said it is a very good move for me. He advised me that I must do extra work. He said he will be there; I must call him anytime I need help,” Mofokeng said.

Broos’ advice carries significant weight given his extensive experience in Belgian football. The 74-year-old enjoyed a distinguished playing career as a defender with Anderlecht and Club Brugge, making more than 500 appearances in Belgium’s top flight.

He also established himself as one of the country’s most respected coaches, winning multiple Belgian First Division titles and Belgian Cups during successful spells with Club Brugge, Anderlecht and KRC Genk.

Since taking charge of Bafana Bafana, Broos has consistently encouraged South Africa’s brightest prospects to pursue careers in Europe’s top leagues, arguing that regular exposure to higher levels of competition is crucial to improving the national team’s performances.

Mofokeng’s move sees him become the latest South African to feature in the Belgian Pro League, where he will join compatriot Shandre Campbell, who plays for Club Brugge.

The transfer marks a major milestone in Mofokeng’s career as he prepares for his first season in European football, with expectations high that the switch will accelerate his development and strengthen his role within the Bafana Bafana setup.
