McKenzie calls for Mosimane to be paid same as Broos

South Africa’s Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has called on SAFA to ensure Pitso Mosimane is paid at least as much as outgoing Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.

SAFA’s National Executive Committee approved Mosimane’s appointment on 8 August, but the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach has yet to be officially unveiled as negotiations over his contract continue.

The delay has raised concerns over South Africa’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which begin in September.

Bafana Bafana have been drawn in Group D with Guinea, Eritrea and Kenya. They are scheduled to face Guinea and Eritrea in September before meeting Kenya twice in November.

Speaking at the South African Sport Awards on Sunday, McKenzie expressed frustration at the lack of progress and questioned why Mosimane’s remuneration should be lower than Broos’.

“I don’t understand what’s going on. I’m going to get a report because I have been told that Pitso Mosimane is our coach,” McKenzie said.

He also called for greater fairness in the way South African coaches are valued, arguing that Mosimane’s record warrants a salary comparable to that of his predecessor.

“Pitso Mosimane is not a coach of the ABC Motsepe League,” he said.

McKenzie pointed to Mosimane’s achievements, including three CAF Champions League titles, and said SAFA should not undervalue a coach with such a record.

“The least they could do is start him with the same salary they started with Hugo Broos,” he added.

Broos, who led South Africa to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations bronze medal and qualification for the 2026 World Cup, recently ended his tenure as Bafana Bafana coach.

Mosimane, meanwhile, is expected to take charge of the national team once his contractual terms with SAFA are finalised.
