Sundowns set to sign Esperance midfielder Yan Sasse

Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly on the verge of completing the signing of Brazilian midfielder Yan Sasse from Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis as they continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new season.

The reigning CAF Champions League holders have identified the 28-year-old as a priority target, with negotiations believed to be at an advanced stage as the club seeks to strengthen its attacking midfield options.

Sasse is no stranger to Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso, having previously worked under the Portuguese tactician during their time together at Espérance. Their existing relationship is understood to have played a significant role in the South African champions’ pursuit of the Brazilian.

Cardoso is believed to be a strong admirer of Sasse’s technical ability, creativity and versatility in the final third, qualities that made him an influential figure during their spell together in Tunisia.

The move comes as Sundowns prepare for the expected departure of Portuguese midfielder Miguel Reisinho, whose stint at Chloorkop appears set to come to an end after just one season.

Reisinho arrived with high expectations after joining the club as part of Sundowns’ efforts to reinforce their squad and eventually fill the void left by Brazilian playmaker Lucas Ribeiro. However, despite flashes of quality, the Portuguese midfielder struggled to establish himself and failed to consistently reproduce the creativity and attacking influence that Ribeiro brought to the team.

With competition for places increasing and the club eager to refresh its midfield, Sundowns are now expected to part ways with Reisinho during the current transfer window.

Yan Sasse has emerged as the preferred candidate to take over that role. The Brazilian has built a reputation as an intelligent attacking midfielder capable of operating in several offensive positions. His vision, dribbling ability, creativity and eye for goal have made him one of the standout foreign players in Tunisian football.

Sundowns believe his experience at continental level and familiarity with Cardoso’s tactical philosophy would allow him to settle quickly and make an immediate impact in the Premier Soccer League and the CAF Champions League.

The club has been proactive in the transfer market as it looks to maintain its dominance domestically while defending its African crown. Recruiting players who already understand Cardoso’s methods appears to be a key part of that strategy.

Should the deal be finalised, Sasse would become one of Sundowns’ marquee additions ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, adding further quality to an already formidable squad packed with international talent.

Although neither club has officially confirmed the transfer, indications suggest the move is progressing well, with Sundowns hopeful of concluding the deal in the coming days as preparations for the new season gather pace.
