Gavi targets three points as Barcelona prepare for Real Madrid showdown

Barcelona midfielder Gavi says he relishes the intensity of El Clasico and believes his side must be focused on securing victory when they host Real Madrid on Sunday.

The meeting is the headline fixture of matchweek 10 in La Liga, with Barcelona arriving in perfect form after winning all nine of their league games so far. They sit top of the table on 27 points, while Real Madrid are third with 21.

Speaking during Barcelona’s media day, in comments reported by Mundo Deportivo, Gavi said he enjoyed the combative nature of the fixture and understood the significance of the points at stake.

“I like going to war in El Clasico matches,” he said.

Gavi also highlighted the importance of head coach Hansi Flick’s approach, saying players must have a clear understanding of their responsibilities before taking part in such a major game.

“The coach’s way of thinking is very important, and it is essential for the players to understand clearly what they have to do in matches,” Gavi said.

“But I am the type of player who genuinely enjoys going to war in El Clasico.”

The 20-year-old is confident Barcelona will give everything from the opening whistle, reflecting the strong feelings within the squad towards the club’s biggest domestic rivals.

“We are all Barcelona supporters, and we always want to beat Real Madrid every time,” he added.

Gavi expects the contest to offer an entertaining spectacle for supporters, but insisted Barcelona’s priority would be the result rather than the occasion.

“It will be a great match for the fans,” he said. “The most important thing for us is to take the three points, whatever the cost.”
