Egypt reward World Cup heroes Hossam Hassan and Ibrahim with contract extensions
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has approved contract extensions for head coach Hossam Hassan and national team director Ibrahim Hassan following the Pharaohs’ historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
EFA president Engineer Hany Abo Rida confirmed that the board unanimously backed the decision, rewarding the technical leadership for guiding Egypt to a memorable tournament run that ended in a dramatic last-16 defeat to defending champions Argentina.
The extension is designed to provide stability to the national team setup and allow the coaching staff to continue building on the progress made during their current tenure.
World Cup exploits earn Hassan brothers new deal
Hossam Hassan’s future was secured after Egypt produced one of the strongest World Cup performances in their history, competing against some of the world’s best teams on football’s biggest stage.
The Pharaohs impressed during the group phase, highlighted by a determined 1-1 draw against Belgium, before advancing to the knockout rounds and pushing Argentina to the limit in a dramatic encounter.
In the round of 16 clash in Atlanta, Egypt stunned the reigning champions by taking a 2-0 lead through goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico. Although Argentina mounted a late comeback to win 3-2, the Pharaohs earned widespread praise for their organisation, confidence and attacking approach.
The match was also marked by controversy, with Egypt disputing several key refereeing decisions, including a disallowed goal and a penalty appeal. The EFA later submitted an official complaint to FIFA over the officiating.
Despite the defeat, the tournament performance strengthened the federation’s belief that Hassan and his staff are the right team to lead Egypt’s next phase of development.
Federation prioritises long-term technical project
Abo Rida said the contract renewal forms part of a wider technical plan aimed at creating a stronger and more sustainable national team structure.
The federation believes continuity will be crucial after years of frequent coaching changes disrupted Egypt’s progress. By keeping the Hassan brothers in charge through 2030, officials hope to establish a clear pathway focused on youth development, talent identification and improved preparation methods.
The long-term project will also seek to integrate emerging players with experienced internationals while improving training programmes ahead of future competitions and qualification campaigns.
The EFA views the recent World Cup success as evidence that stability can deliver results and wants the current coaching team to continue shaping a competitive squad capable of challenging at the highest level.
Final paperwork to be completed after team return
The formal completion of the contract extensions will take place once the national team delegation returns to Egypt.
According to Abo Rida, the EFA board will hold an official meeting to complete the necessary administrative procedures and finalise the agreements.
The move will allow Hossam Hassan and his staff to immediately focus on preparing the Pharaohs for upcoming international commitments, with the federation determined to build on the momentum created by their historic World Cup adventure.
