World Cup 2026: Deschamps unfazed by Argentine refereeing team ahead of Morocco clash
France head coach Didier Deschamps has brushed aside concerns over FIFA’s decision to appoint an all-Argentine refereeing team for Les Bleus’ 2026 World Cup quarter-final against Morocco, insisting his side’s only focus is overcoming the Atlas Lions.
The appointment has generated debate because of the intense rivalry that has developed between France and Argentina since the 2022 World Cup final, as well as recent tensions surrounding officiating decisions during the tournament. Nevertheless, Deschamps made it clear he has complete faith in the match officials.
“No. You may ask yourselves those questions, but I don’t pay attention to that,” Deschamps said.
“I hope the referee is as good as Mr. Letexier and his assistants were in the other match. My opponent is Morocco, not the referee. On the contrary, he’s there to apply the laws of the game as fairly as possible.”
France arrive in the quarter-finals after another impressive display against Paraguay in the Round of 16. Les Bleus secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory, with captain Kylian Mbappe converting the decisive penalty in a physical contest that saw Paraguay frustrate the French attack for long periods. Didier Deschamps’ men showed patience and defensive discipline to protect their slender advantage and book a meeting with Morocco.
The victory continued France’s outstanding tournament. After topping Group I with a perfect record, they swept aside Sweden 3-0 in the Round of 32 before edging past Paraguay. Having won all five matches, France remain among the favourites to lift the World Cup.
Kylian Mbappe has once again been central to France’s success. The Real Madrid forward has scored seven goals at the tournament, placing him firmly in the race for the Golden Boot as he looks to add another individual honour to his growing list of achievements.
Alongside Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise has emerged as one of the stars of the competition. The Bayern Munich playmaker leads the World Cup assist charts with five assists, including two in France’s victory over Sweden, and continues to dictate Les Bleus’ attacking play with his creativity and vision.
France’s biggest challenge of the tournament now awaits. Morocco have already eliminated the Netherlands and comfortably defeated Canada to reach the last eight, setting up a fascinating rematch of the 2022 World Cup semi-final. While Deschamps acknowledges the quality of Ouahbi’s side, he is adamant that external distractions, including the nationality of the referees, will not affect France’s preparations.
