Mali new coach Anthony Da Silva reveals criteria for squad selection
New Mali head coach Anthony Da Silva insists the best performing players will only be selected to represent the nation
Having been appointed a few weeks ago, the Portuguese tactician officially began his tenure as Mali’s head coach and addressed the media for the first time during a press conference in Bamako on Monday, July 6.
Da Silva praised the overall quality within the Mali squad but stressed that fierce competition for places means every player must prove they deserve to be in the team.
The new coach singled out midfield as one of the squad’s strongest departments, while admitting there are still areas that require strengthening, particularly in attack.
“Today, we have quality players, particularly in midfield. Not everyone can play; the best performers will play, but there are gaps in certain positions, particularly in attack.
“My philosophy is clear. I like teams that take the initiative, are capable of controlling the ball and dictating the pace of matches.”
Da Silva’s comments underline his intention to build a competitive squad based on merit rather than reputation as he begins a new era with the Eagles.
The Portuguese coach is expected to focus on creating a possession-based side capable of dominating games, while also addressing the team’s shortcomings in the attacking department.
His appointment marks the beginning of a fresh chapter for the Mali national team, with expectations high that his tactical philosophy and emphasis on performance will help the Eagles compete consistently at the highest level in African and international football.
