Newcastle open talks for World Cup breakout star Johan Manzambi

Newcastle United are preparing to open negotiations with SC Freiburg over a potential move for midfield sensation Johan Manzambi as they accelerate plans to strengthen their squad.

The Magpies have identified the Switzerland international as a priority target this transfer window and believe they are currently in the strongest position to secure his signature despite growing interest from other clubs.

Manzambi’s stock has risen dramatically during the World Cup, where his performances have introduced him to a wider global audience. However, Newcastle’s interest predates his tournament breakthrough, with the club having monitored his progress in Germany for some time.

The 20-year-old is understood to be attracted by the possibility of moving to St James’ Park, with Newcastle working behind the scenes to turn their long-standing admiration into a completed deal.

World Cup rise puts Europe’s top clubs on alert

Manzambi has emerged as one of the surprise stars of the tournament after making a significant impact for Switzerland.

The midfielder has contributed three goals and two assists during the competition, including a stunning substitute appearance against Bosnia and Herzegovina where he scored twice during a 19-minute cameo.

He followed that display by finding the net again after earning a starting role in Switzerland’s final group-stage match against co-hosts Canada.

Switzerland’s progress has only increased attention around the young midfielder, who faces Colombia in the last 16 as he continues to showcase his ability on the biggest stage.

Despite his World Cup breakthrough, Newcastle’s recruitment team have been impressed by his performances for Freiburg over the past year, particularly his ability to drive forward with the ball, break defensive lines and influence matches from midfield.

Manzambi viewed as long-term midfield upgrade

Newcastle’s pursuit comes amid significant changes in their midfield department.

The club recently allowed Sandro Tonali to join Tottenham Hotspur in a deal that could rise to £100 million, while there has also been speculation surrounding Bruno Guimarães, although Newcastle have maintained that the Brazilian is not available for transfer.

The Magpies are also advancing talks for 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax, but Manzambi remains the club’s main midfield priority.

With Joe Willock entering the final year of his contract and potentially set to leave, Newcastle see Manzambi as a natural replacement for the former Arsenal midfielder — and potentially an upgrade.

His combination of physical ability, attacking instincts and technical quality fits the profile manager Eddie Howe has traditionally looked for in his midfielders.

Newcastle confident despite competition for signature

Manzambi has already built considerable experience despite his young age, making 58 appearances for Freiburg and scoring nine goals since making his first-team debut in August 2024.

The midfielder began his career with Swiss side Servette FC before joining Freiburg’s academy in 2023, where his development accelerated.

Newcastle believe his explosive performances and potential ceiling make him an ideal fit for the Premier League, but they are aware that his World Cup form has attracted attention from elsewhere.

The Magpies view securing Manzambi as an important statement of intent after losing key players and want to move quickly before competition intensifies.

If Newcastle can complete the deal, the signing would represent another major investment in young talent and could soften the impact of recent departures while adding one of Europe’s most exciting emerging midfielders to Howe’s squad.
