World Cup 2026: Cape Verde welcomed home in style after landmark campaign
Thousands of jubilant supporters filled Praia’s international airport as Cape Verde national football team returned home on Sunday, greeted like champions after a historic World Cup campaign that captured global attention.
Waving flags and banners in the team’s iconic blue, fans packed the terminal and surrounding roads, desperate for a glimpse of the squad that had rewritten expectations on football’s biggest stage. The celebrations are expected to continue with a parade through the capital before the players are received by the president and senior government officials of the island nation.
The homecoming carried added emotional weight as it coincided with Cape Verde’s independence anniversary, turning an already symbolic moment into a national celebration of identity and achievement.
Defeat in Miami does little to dim pride
The Blue Sharks’ journey ended in dramatic fashion in Miami, where they pushed reigning world champions Argentina to the limit in a thrilling last-32 encounter. Despite a fearless display, Cape Verde eventually fell 3-2 after extra time in a match that showcased their resilience on the global stage.
Their run to the knockout rounds in their debut World Cup appearance had already secured their place in history. A nation of just around half a million people had defied the odds, advancing beyond the group stage and earning admiration from neutral fans worldwide.
Head coach Bubista, speaking after landing in Praia, reflected on a campaign that exceeded all external expectations.
“We demonstrated that our World Cup qualification wasn’t down to luck. We showed hard work and resilience, and we left the United States with our heads held high,” he said.
Heroes welcomed as national pride swells
At the airport, supporters strained to catch sight of key figures such as defender Sidny Lopes Cabral and veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, both of whom played pivotal roles in the team’s remarkable run.
Government recognition quickly followed, with Minister of Culture and Sports Antonio Duarte praising the squad for what he described as elevating the nation’s global standing and “cementing Cape Verde’s status as a great nation”.
Even in defeat, celebrations had erupted back home during the early hours following the Argentina match, with fans embracing the team’s unexpected journey and competitive showing against one of football’s giants.
A small nation with a global impact
The achievements of Cape Verde carry deep national significance, coming as the country marked 51 years of independence from Portugal, which had ruled the islands for five centuries.
What began as an underdog story has evolved into a defining chapter in Cape Verde’s sporting history, with the Blue Sharks returning home not as beaten finalists, but as national symbols of belief, unity and possibility.
