World Cup 2026: Folarin Balogun joins Zidane and Ronaldinho in exclusive World Cup history club

The United States have received a significant boost ahead of their World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium after striker Folarin Balogun’s automatic one-match suspension was suspended, clearing him to feature in the knockout tie.

Sources with knowledge of the disciplinary process have confirmed that the 25-year-old will be available despite receiving a straight red card during the Americans’ 2-0 group-stage victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Balogun was dismissed after a challenge on defender Tarik Muharemovic, with referee Raphael Claus initially allowing play to continue before sending the striker off following a VAR review. Under FIFA tournament regulations, a straight red card normally carries an automatic one-match suspension.

However, FIFA’s disciplinary framework allows judicial bodies to suspend the implementation of sanctions in certain circumstances, a provision that has now worked in Balogun’s favour.

The suspended punishment means the forward will remain eligible unless he commits another offence of a similar nature during the probation period, at which point the original sanction could be reactivated alongside any new disciplinary action.

Red card controversy sparks debate

Balogun’s dismissal quickly became one of the tournament’s most debated refereeing decisions.

The incident occurred shortly after the hour mark as the striker stretched to reach a loose ball near the touchline, making contact with Muharemovic’s leg before raking down towards the defender’s ankle.

Although Claus did not initially issue a red card, he was instructed to review the challenge on the pitchside monitor before determining it amounted to serious foul play.

Under the Laws of the Game, challenges that endanger an opponent’s safety or involve excessive force are punishable by a straight dismissal.

The decision drew widespread criticism across the United States camp, with players, supporters and television analysts arguing the punishment was excessive.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino was among those left frustrated.

“For me? Never a red card,” he said. “Never an intention to step on the player. It was a normal action in football that happened by accident.”

Captain Christian Pulisic also rallied behind his teammate.

“It’s just so unfortunate, honestly,” Pulisic said. “Looking back at it, it just seems so harsh. I just told him, he’s done so much for us, and now we got his back.”

One of the tournament’s standout forwards

Balogun’s availability is a timely boost for the co-hosts given the form he has shown throughout the competition.

The striker has started all but one of the United States’ World Cup matches, opening his campaign with a brace against Paraguay before being rested for the final group game against Turkey.

He returned to the starting lineup against Bosnia and Herzegovina and marked his comeback with another goal before his sending-off.

Remarkably, Balogun has registered at least one goal contribution in every World Cup appearance so far, making him one of the tournament’s most productive attacking players.

His influence has been central to the United States’ run into the knockout rounds, with his movement, finishing and link-up play providing a focal point in Pochettino’s attack.

Belgium challenge awaits

The decision leaves the United States at full attacking strength for a highly anticipated meeting with Belgium, coached by Rudi Garcia.

FIFA has previously used suspended sanctions in high-profile cases, including Cristiano Ronaldo, whose disciplinary punishment before a World Cup was partially suspended under similar provisions.

Not every player has received such treatment. While Paraguay’s Miguel Almirón escaped an extended suspension, Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo saw his punishment increased to five matches after a challenge that resulted in a serious injury.

Balogun’s case has instead ended with relief for the United States, who can now call upon one of their most dangerous attacking weapons as they chase a place in the quarter-finals.

For Pochettino, the timing could hardly be better. Just days after fearing he would lose his in-form striker for one of the biggest matches of the tournament, he instead heads into the Belgium showdown with Balogun available and confidence restored.
