Leon Guwara: Energie Cottbus linked with move for free-agent Gambia-Germany left-back

Gambia-Germany defender Leon Guwara, currently a free agent after leaving his last club, is being linked with a move to 2. Bundesliga side Energie Cottbus.

The 30-year-old left-back, valued at around €225,000 on Transfermarkt, is listed as “Without Club” following the expiry of his most recent contract, making him available on a free transfer. Reports in Germany on 3 July 2026 placed Cottbus among the clubs exploring a deal, though the probability of the move remains unclear and is currently marked only as “?”.

Born in Köln on 28 June 1996 and standing at 1.85m, Guwara holds both Gambian and German nationality and is a natural left-footer. His main position is at left-back, but he has also been used across the defensive line during his career.

Guwara’s recent competitive action came before his spell without a club, with his last recorded outing featuring at left-back in league action in Germany. In that match, played in early 2026, his side fell to defeat but he completed the game, contributing primarily in a defensive role as his team struggled to create chances in a narrow loss.

The experienced defender has built a career largely in German football, and a move to Energie Cottbus would keep him in a familiar environment while returning him to 2. Bundesliga level. With no transfer fee required and his market value relatively modest, Cottbus are seen as assessing whether his profile fits their squad planning.

If the move materialises, joining Cottbus as a free agent could give Guwara the platform to re-establish himself in a competitive league and influence the next phase of his career.
