A Cape Verde press conference ahead of their World Cup round of 32 match against Argentina was disrupted after officials repeatedly prevented questions relating to captain Ryan Mendes, who is the subject of a rape investigation.

The briefing, held on Thursday, initially focused on the team’s build-up to the match, with coach Bubista and defender Ianique Stopira speaking about what they described as a “dream come true” ahead of facing the reigning world champions.

However, the tone of the conference changed when journalists attempted to raise questions about Mendes’ legal situation, prompting immediate intervention from officials present.

Questions redirected during press conference

According to those present, Cape Verde’s press officer first stepped in to redirect the line of questioning, insisting that the discussion remain focused on football matters.

FIFA officials later also intervened, reinforcing the position that neither Bubista nor Stopira would respond to questions regarding the ongoing investigation involving the national team captain.

On three separate occasions, attempts to address the issue were shut down, with organisers maintaining strict control over the direction of the press briefing.

The repeated refusals created a tense atmosphere in the room, as journalists were limited to discussing only sporting topics.

Pre-briefing instruction restricted media questions

Prior to the press conference, Cape Verde’s media officer had already instructed journalists to focus solely on football-related matters, specifically requesting “questions only about the match”.

That instruction was reiterated during the briefing itself, as officials maintained that the session was intended exclusively for sporting discussion ahead of the high-profile encounter with Argentina.

Despite the restrictions, the attempted questions about Mendes highlighted the broader media attention surrounding the case.

Ongoing investigation into Ryan Mendes

Ryan Mendes, the Cape Verde captain, is currently the subject of a rape complaint filed by an interpreter during a tour of Oceania in March 2026.

The investigation has placed additional scrutiny on the national team during their World Cup campaign, although officials at the press conference chose not to address the matter publicly.

The situation leaves Cape Verde preparing for one of the biggest matches in their history under intense off-field attention, with focus now expected to return to the pitch as they face Argentina in the knockout stage.
