World Cup 2026: Argentina vs Cape Verde – Preview, analysis and kick-off time
Cape Verde will attempt to continue their remarkable FIFA World Cup journey when they face defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32 on Friday in Miami.
The Blue Sharks have already emerged as one of the standout stories of the tournament after reaching the knockout stage in their first-ever World Cup appearance while remaining unbeaten.
Standing in their way, however, is an Argentina side led by Lionel Messi and showing strong signs of mounting another successful title defence.
The South Americans progressed to the knockout rounds after winning all three of their group-stage matches and extending their current winning run to ten games.
Messi continues to dominate World Cup spotlight
Argentina completed a perfect group campaign with a 3-1 victory over Jordan and have conceded only twice during their impressive streak.
As expected, much of the focus remains on captain Lionel Messi.
At 39 years old and appearing in his sixth World Cup, Messi continues to break records on football’s biggest stage. The Argentine star currently leads the Golden Boot race with six goals and recently became the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches.
Friday’s fixture in Miami is also expected to provide a familiar environment for Messi, who has lived in the city since 2023.
Cape Verde continuing to defy expectations
Despite facing one of the tournament favourites, Cape Verde arrive with growing belief after navigating a difficult group without suffering defeat.
The African side came through a section containing Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia to secure a historic place in the knockout stages.
Their achievement made them the first debuting nation to reach the knockout rounds since Slovakia in 2010 and the first African country to accomplish the feat since Ghana in 2006.
Cape Verde also became the first nation since Chile in 1998 to progress from a World Cup group without winning a match after drawing all three of their fixtures.
Goalkeeper Vozinha has been central to their impressive run, with the 40-year-old producing a series of important performances to frustrate some of world football’s strongest nations.
History favours defending champions
This will be the first-ever meeting between Argentina and Cape Verde.
History, however, points heavily towards the reigning world champions. Argentina have won each of their last seven World Cup matches against African opposition.
Even so, Lionel Scaloni’s side have often been forced into difficult knockout battles, with seven of their previous 13 World Cup knockout matches going to extra time.
Cape Verde will hope their defensive discipline and resilience can once again help them compete against one of football’s global powers as they seek another famous result for African football.
