Franck Kessié opens up on World Cup exit

Ivory Coast captain Franck Kessié has expressed both disappointment and pride following his outfit elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after 2-1 defeat to Norway in Round 32.

The Elephants’ campaign ended in painful fashion after a narrow loss, with the team unable to extend what had been a promising run in the tournament.

As captain, Kessié addressed the setback by sharing an emotional message on social media, reflecting on the disappointment of the result while also recognizing the effort put in by the squad throughout the competition.

He admitted the exit was difficult to accept, especially given the ambition within the group to build on their strong qualification campaign and continue progressing on the global stage.

Despite the frustration, the midfielder stressed the unity and fighting spirit shown by the team, insisting they gave everything until the final whistle.

He also praised his teammates and the coaching staff for their commitment and dedication in representing the nation at the highest level.

The defeat brings Ivory Coast’s World Cup journey to an end, but Kessié’s words captured both the pain of elimination and the pride in the team’s collective effort.

“It’s hard to find the words today. This elimination inevitably leaves a bitter taste. We were determined to continue this journey and build on the momentum of that historic qualification, which had made an entire country proud. Despite this disappointment, what stands out most for me is the strength of this squad.

I am proud of each and every one of my team-mates, the coaching staff and everyone who worked day in, day out to defend the colours of Ivory Coast with honour. We gave it our all right up to the very last moment, without ever giving up.”

Attention now turns to rebuilding and future competitions, with the Elephants expected to regroup and aim for a stronger return on the international stage.
