Kylian Mbappe continued his outstanding World Cup campaign by scoring twice in France’s 3-0 victory over Sweden, setting a new tournament record and further strengthening his place among football’s elite players.

The French forward produced another decisive display in the Round of 32 clash, taking his tally at the 2026 FIFA World Cup to six goals and drawing level with Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.

Mbappe’s latest double also moved him to 18 career World Cup goals, leaving him just one strike behind Messi’s all-time tournament scoring record.

Historic achievement for France star

According to statistics published by Squawka, Mbappe has now become the first player in World Cup history to score two or more goals in seven different matches across multiple editions of the tournament.

The achievement places him ahead of several legendary names in football history, including Messi.

Mbappe’s multi-goal performances have come against Argentina in 2018 and 2022, Denmark in 2022, Poland in 2022, Senegal and Iraq at the 2026 World Cup, and now Sweden.

The 27-year-old’s consistency on football’s biggest stage has further underlined his reputation as one of the defining players of his generation.

Real Madrid and La Liga milestones

Statistics platform Opta also noted that Mbappe became only the second Real Madrid player to score six goals in a single World Cup tournament.

The first was Croatia’s Davor Suker, who reached the same total during the 1998 edition.

Mbappe’s goals have also contributed to a strong tournament for Spanish league clubs in terms of World Cup scoring records.

Barcelona remain top of the historic rankings with 16 goals scored by their players during the 1994 tournament, while Real Madrid have now reached 13 goals in the current edition, helped by Mbappe’s latest brace against Sweden.

France’s convincing victory secured their place in the Round of 16, with Mbappe once again emerging as the central figure in their quest for another World Cup title.
