World Cup 2026: Senegal coach Pape Thiaw hails Africa’s historic rise after nine nations reach knockout stage
Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has praised the outstanding performances of African nations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, declaring that the continent has proven it can compete with the very best on the global stage.
Africa has enjoyed one of its most successful World Cup campaigns ever at the tournament currently being staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Out of the 10 African representatives that qualified for the competition, an impressive nine nations have advanced to the Round of 32, underlining the rapid progress of football across the continent.
Speaking ahead of Senegal’s knockout clash against Belgium, Thiaw said the performances recorded by African teams demonstrate both growth and growing confidence among the continent’s football nations.
“Africa has shown that when opportunities arise, it knows how to seize them. We have nothing to envy anyone. African teams are performing very well, with coaches from the continent,” Thiaw said.
The Senegalese tactician also singled out Democratic Republic of the Congo for special praise after the Leopards secured qualification for the knockout stage.
“I would particularly like to congratulate the DR Congo on their qualification,” he added.
Africa’s strong representation in the Round of 32 has become one of the major talking points of the tournament. Traditional continental heavyweights such as Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Algeria and Ivory Coast have all progressed, while nations like Cape Verde, South Africa and DR Congo have also made headlines with impressive campaigns.
The achievements of African coaches have equally attracted attention, with several national teams being guided by tacticians from the continent itself. Thiaw believes this is another important sign of the development of African football and the growing trust in local expertise.
African teams have produced disciplined displays, tactical maturity and fearless performances against some of the biggest football nations in the world throughout the competition. Their success has strengthened hopes that the continent could produce a serious title contender deep into the tournament.
Senegal will now look to continue that momentum when the Lions of Teranga face Belgium in the Round of 32 at Lumen Field in Seattle.
With African football enjoying a landmark tournament, expectations continue to rise as the knockout phase gathers momentum.
