Edouard Mendy returns to camp ahead of Belgium clash

Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has rejoined the Lions of Teranga squad ahead of their crucial Round of 32 encounter against Belgium at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The experienced shot-stopper had temporarily left Senegal’s training camp after suffering an injury during the group stage of the tournament currently taking place across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Mendy travelled back to Saudi Arabia to undergo additional medical examinations with his club’s medical staff before returning to the Senegal camp in the United States.

Despite his return, the 34-year-old will not be available for selection when Senegal face Belgium on Wednesday, 1 July, in the knockout stage of the competition.

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw confirmed the goalkeeper’s situation during a pre-match press conference, while expressing hope that Mendy could still play a role later in the tournament if the Lions of Teranga continue their World Cup journey.

“Edouard Mendy went back to see his club’s doctors for further tests. He has returned with the squad. Although he won’t be fit to play, he’ll be by our side. We hope to win so that he can join us for the rest of the tournament,” Thiaw said.

Mendy’s presence around the squad is expected to provide a major psychological boost for the Senegalese players as they prepare for one of their toughest tests of the competition. The former African champion has been an important figure for Senegal over the years, bringing leadership, experience and composure to the national team setup.

Senegal will take on Belgium at Lumen Field in Seattle, with kick-off scheduled for 8 pm GMT.

The Lions of Teranga are aiming to secure a place in the next round and continue Africa’s strong representation at the tournament, while also hoping Mendy can recover in time to contribute should they progress further.
