World Cup 2026: To us, nothing is impossible, says Cape Verde coach Bubista ahead of Argentina clash

Cape Verde coach Bubista has expressed confidence ahead of his side’s historic FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash against defending champions Argentina, insisting that his team will not be intimidated by the challenge posed by the South American giants.

The Blue Sharks secured their place in the knockout stage after battling to a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia in their final Group H match, a result that was enough to seal second place and book a maiden appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds.

In reaching the last 32, Cape Verde made history by becoming the smallest nation ever to advance beyond the group stage of the tournament, marking another significant milestone in the country’s remarkable football journey.

Their reward, however, is a daunting encounter against Lionel Messi’s Argentina, one of the favourites to lift the trophy and the reigning world champions.

Despite the magnitude of the challenge, Bubista remains optimistic about his side’s chances and believes his players have already demonstrated that they belong on football’s biggest stage.

“To us, nothing is impossible,” Bubista said, according to Pan Africa Football.

The Cape Verde coach also urged his compatriots to celebrate the team’s achievements, regardless of what happens against Argentina.

“We, the people of Cape Verde, have to be proud of what the team has done. First of all, we are proud to be able to play Argentina,” he added.

Cape Verde’s impressive World Cup campaign has captured the imagination of football fans across Africa and beyond, with the island nation defying expectations to progress from a competitive Group H.

Having already etched their names into the history books, the Blue Sharks will now seek to produce one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history when they take on Argentina in the Round of 32 next weekend.

While Argentina boast a squad filled with world-class talent and experience, Cape Verde will draw inspiration from their resilience and underdog spirit as they look to continue their fairytale run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
