Sipho Mbule secures move to Iraqi club Zakho SC after Orlando Pirates exit

South African midfielder Sipho Mbule has embarked on a new chapter in his career after completing a move to Iraqi top-flight side Zakho SC as a free agent following his departure from Orlando Pirates.

The Iraqi Stars League outfit confirmed the signing of the talented midfielder, with Mbule joining the club ahead of the 2026/27 season as he seeks to revive his career abroad.

The move comes just weeks after Orlando Pirates decided against extending the 28-year-old’s contract, making him available on a free transfer.

Mbule’s exit from the Buccaneers marked the end of a brief but eventful spell at the Soweto giants.

Having joined Pirates at the beginning of the 2025/26 campaign, the former Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United star made 23 appearances across all competitions and helped the club secure domestic silverware during his stay.

Despite showing flashes of the immense talent that has long made him one of South Africa’s most highly-rated midfielders, Mbule struggled for consistent game time during the latter stages of the season, leading to speculation over his future.

Pirates eventually opted not to trigger an extension clause in his contract, paving the way for his departure.

Mbule had attracted interest from several clubs following his release, with reports suggesting that the player was keen on pursuing opportunities outside South Africa.

His agent, Mike Makaab, previously revealed that the midfielder was open to continuing his career abroad, and the move to Iraq appears to have fulfilled that ambition.

The Bethlehem-born midfielder now faces the challenge of establishing himself in Iraqi football as Zakho SC look to strengthen their squad for the upcoming campaign.

Mbule, who has represented Bafana Bafana at senior level, will be hoping that a fresh start in Iraq can reignite his career and potentially place him back in contention for future national team call-ups.
