Bergvall ends Tottenham uncertainty by signing new contract

Lucas Bergvall has ended speculation over his Tottenham future by signing a new contract with the club.

The 20-year-old Sweden midfielder had indicated earlier in the summer that he wanted to leave Spurs after struggling to secure regular playing time in his preferred position during a difficult 2025/26 campaign.

His situation attracted interest from several Premier League clubs. Nottingham Forest reportedly saw a 38 million pound bid rejected, while Newcastle were also linked with Bergvall. Aston Villa and Chelsea were reported to be interested as well.

However, Bergvall featured regularly for Tottenham during pre-season under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi and started the club’s Premier League opener against Brentford.

He has now decided to remain in north London, saying he believes Tottenham are progressing in the right direction.

“I think we’re building something great here. It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract,” Bergvall said.

“I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.

“Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can. I’m getting better every day in training and I’m looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”

Bergvall joined Tottenham from Djurgarden in 2024 and has made 80 appearances for the club. He has played 45 minutes in the Premier League so far this season.

De Zerbi previously described Bergvall as a “top, top, top player”, but said in July that he would not try to keep anyone who wanted to leave. The Italian also admitted that he had made mistakes in his handling of the midfielder during the turbulent final stages of last season.

The Tottenham manager has since welcomed Bergvall’s decision to stay and believes the midfielder still has significant scope to improve.

“Every day in training you can see Lucas’ desire to learn, improve and push himself to the highest level,” De Zerbi said.

“Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments.

“He also understands that development is a process and he has shown a fantastic attitude towards working on the areas of his game where he can become even better.

“I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential.”
