PSL chairman Irvin Khoza warns Soweto derby could move from FNB Stadium

Premier Soccer League chairman Irvin Khoza has warned that the Soweto derby could be moved to Moses Mabhida Stadium after FNB Stadium came under intense scrutiny following Saturday’s crowd-control problems.

Around 6,000 spectators were reportedly denied entry despite holding tickets, including some who had suite tickets, after the Johannesburg venue reached capacity. A video circulated on social media appeared to show frustrated supporters vandalising barriers and damaging steel gates when they were refused access.

There were also alleged incidents of security staff accepting bribes from supporters without tickets. Fans who arrived only minutes before kick-off were locked out, while a group forced its way through the gates, raising further safety and security concerns.

The problems persisted despite Stadium Management SA chief executive Bertie Grobbelaar having outlined measures intended to prevent overcrowding at the previous derby.

Khoza said the organisations and individuals involved in staging matches at FNB Stadium had not carried out their responsibilities properly. He said the PSL had requested a briefing on Thursday and warned that those who failed to improve could be publicly identified.

“We went to Durban for the final of Pirates and Chiefs in the Nedbank [Cup]; nothing of the sort happened. Pirates and Sundowns, nothing of the sort happened, why here?” Khoza told eNCA.

“There are certain role players who are not playing their part, but I cannot name and shame them on television because I’ve asked for a briefing on Thursday to make sure that if they don’t make up the act, we’re going to name and shame them because they are letting us down.”

Khoza pointed to Moses Mabhida Stadium as an alternative venue, saying the Durban ground had successfully hosted major matches without similar incidents.

“Maybe in the future, instead of going to FNB Stadium, let’s go to Durban because they are good hosts. They do things professionally. All our events are seamless.”

Moses Mabhida Stadium manager Zakhi Mkhize said the venue was equipped to stage high-profile fixtures, including the derby.

“Moses Mabhida is a soccer stadium that welcomes big-match content like the derby,” Mkhize told Sowetan.

“Our stadium is also open seven days a week for permanent staff for maintenance and coordination of content. The approach to hosting becomes a city initiative so that all sectors from security, health, communication and governance work cohesively and efficiently to deliver a safe sporting environment.”

Grobbelaar could not be reached for comment.
