Emmanuel Longelo targets DR Congo call-up after impressive Motherwell season
Defender says Scotland move felt “completely natural” as international ambition grows
Motherwell defender Emmanuel Longelo has expressed his desire to represent the Democratic Republic of Congo, saying he believes he can one day earn a place with the Leopards after an impressive first season in Scottish football.
The left-back revealed his international ambitions during an interview with the British press, explaining that wearing the colours of DR Congo would be a source of pride for both himself and his family.
Longelo said he has already been in contact with the national team’s coaching staff, a development he believes offers encouragement for the future.
He also recalled watching the Leopards’ intercontinental play-off against Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz with great emotion, underlining his growing connection with the national side.
A fresh start at Motherwell
Defender rebuilt his career in Scotland
Longelo’s move to Motherwell marked a turning point after a difficult spell at Birmingham City, where he struggled to establish himself.
A loan move to Cambridge United also failed to provide the breakthrough he had hoped for. However, his arrival in the Scottish Premiership proved to be the fresh start he needed.
Having developed through West Ham United’s academy alongside his brother Rosaire, who now plays for Salford, Longelo adapted quickly to life at Motherwell.
He earned the confidence of the coaching staff and became an important figure for the club throughout the campaign.
His performances helped Motherwell secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Conference League, making the campaign one of the most memorable of his career.
Reflecting on the decision to move north, Longelo explained that choosing Motherwell came after careful consideration with his family.
“Last summer, I was torn between wanting to leave and wanting to stay. In the end, I decided to trust myself and take a risk. I discussed it at length with my family, who advised me to follow my instincts. I never want to reach a stage in my career where I rest on my laurels. Ultimately, my arrival at Motherwell felt completely natural, but I was surprised by how cold it is in Scotland. Before signing, I got off the plane at night and there was a terrible wind. I thought to myself, ‘It’s summer, why is the weather like this?’ It was even colder the next day! But I’ve gotten used to it since.”
Strong performances strengthen his case
Successful campaign boosts confidence
Longelo’s first season in Scotland saw him become one of Motherwell’s regular performers.
The former West Ham academy graduate featured in 44 matches during the campaign, scoring nine goals and providing five assists.
He accumulated 3,118 minutes on the pitch, impressive figures for a player adapting to a new league and environment.
His consistent displays came after signing a two-year contract with the club, which also includes an option for a third season.
While Longelo’s immediate focus remains on continuing his progress with Motherwell, his long-term ambition is clear.
Encouraged by conversations with the DR Congo coaching staff and backed by his family, the defender hopes his performances in Scotland will eventually earn him the opportunity to represent the Leopards on the international stage.
