World Cup 2026: Jurgen Klopp walks out after Schweinsteiger’s ‘racial remarks’ over Ivory Coast
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp refused to comment on the controversial statements made by former Germany international Bastian Schweinsteiger regarding Ivory Coast before abruptly ending a television interview.
Schweinsteiger, the former Bayern Munich and Manchester United midfielder, sparked widespread criticism after reportedly describing Ivory Coast as a team that represents “chaotic” and “impulsive” African football during his analysis of Germany’s World Cup campaign.
The remarks generated strong reactions across the football world, with many fans and analysts accusing the German legend of using offensive stereotypes against African football.
Klopp was later asked about the controversy during his appearance on Magneta TV, but the former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool coach made it clear that he did not want to engage in the debate.
“No, no, impossible, I will not answer this question. Everyone loves this kind of excitement and drama,” Klopp said as quoted by AS.
“It seems that everyone likes this kind of topic. Catering to other people’s wishes is not my job. It is a sensitive issue and I don’t even know what the appropriate response to it is.”
Klopp stressed that the matter could be interpreted differently depending on cultural and personal perspectives.
“For Africans, it has a certain meaning, while others see it from a different perspective. This is not my area of expertise,” he continued.
The German tactician then admitted he had hoped to avoid being drawn into the controversy altogether.
“I said to myself, thank God, no one has asked me about this yet, but you took the opportunity and the surprise is that you are German, and that really surprised me,” Klopp said before withdrawing from the interview.
Away from the controversy, Klopp also shared his thoughts on Germany’s disappointing 2-1 defeat to Ecuador at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a result that raised concerns over the Mannschaft’s tactical approach and mentality.
Klopp criticized Germany’s game plan and insisted the four-time world champions used the wrong tactical setup against an Ecuador side that played with aggression, intensity and physical strength.
“The team lacked the ability to penetrate the opponent’s defense from the 12th minute onwards,” Klopp explained.
He added: “The team followed a style of play with a low defensive block as if they were just practicing it. Many things didn’t work and the performance didn’t give the impression that we would easily get through the next rounds.”
Klopp also questioned Germany’s mentality and intensity during the contest, insisting Ecuador deserved the victory because they competed with greater determination.
“We have to combine technical quality with an exceptional mentality. This mentality is definitely missing,” Klopp stated.
“We have to raise the tempo of our performance. Ecuador played with more passion because they were fighting to stay in the tournament, and we have to match that intensity at least.”
Klopp concluded by highlighting Germany’s struggles in midfield and their poor ball retention during key moments of the match.
“Losing possession of the ball is bad enough, but losing it in the wrong areas is a disaster. Ecuador overwhelmed us in the duels in midfield,” he said.
