World Cup 2026: Horror as car ploughs into Mexico fans celebrating victory, leaving 17 injured
Mexico completed a flawless group-stage campaign with a commanding 3-0 win over the Czech Republic, sealing maximum points and easing into the Round of 32.
What should have been a night of unrestrained celebration quickly descended into panic, however, after celebrations in Cabo San Lucas were shattered by a violent incident in the streets.
Thousands of supporters had gathered across Baja California Sur, with roads closed off as fans poured into the area to mark Mexico’s dominant run. The mood was festive and orderly until events took a dangerous turn in the heart of the celebrations.
Car accelerates into packed supporters
Footage reported by The Sun showed a black vehicle stationary in the crowd, surrounded by fans who had pressed up against its bonnet and windows.
In a sudden and alarming moment, the car is said to have accelerated directly into the gathering, striking multiple people as it forced its way through the packed street.
Panic spread immediately as spectators scattered in different directions while the vehicle attempted to leave the scene. Reports from Metro indicate that those inside the car were detained shortly afterwards by authorities, bringing a swift but chaotic end to the incident.
Emergency response as injuries mount
At least 17 people were injured, with one individual reported to be in a serious condition as medical teams responded to the unfolding emergency.
Videos circulating on social media amplified the shock, showing the scale of confusion and distress among supporters moments after the impact.
Local authorities have confirmed that an investigation is under way to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and establish responsibility.
Officials and federation respond
The Mexican Football Federation issued a statement expressing deep regret over the events, offering solidarity to those affected and wishing a swift recovery for the injured. Officials emphasised that they are in close contact with authorities as inquiries continue.
Meanwhile, Cabo San Lucas authorities, through Secretary Alberto Rentería Santana, confirmed that security agencies are coordinating their response.
He stressed that immediate attention is being given to the injured, while investigations continue to establish exactly how celebrations turned into a scene of chaos and fear.
