Iran forward Mehdi Taremi has outlined the importance of unity, discipline, and mental strength as the decisive factors in his country’s bid to qualify for the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ahead of their crucial final Group G clash against Egypt.

The Asian outfit head into the decisive encounter in a tightly balanced position after opening their campaign with a 2–2 draw against New Zealand followed by a hard-fought goalless stalemate with Belgium. Those results leave qualification still within reach, but with victory against Egypt now seen as essential to guarantee progression.

Speaking to FIFA’s official website, the Olympiacos star reflected on Iran’s performance against Belgium, admitting that while the team executed their tactical plan in phases, they were left with mixed feelings after failing to fully capitalise on their opportunities.

“It was clear that we adopted a more defensive plan in this match compared to the current circumstances, and we were hoping to come away with a point,” Taremi said. “We were under slight pressure at the beginning of the match, but after about 20 to 30 minutes, our performance improved and we were able to show our abilities on the field.”

He added that Iran gradually grew into the game and managed to create chances, but lacked the final edge to secure victory even after Belgium were reduced to ten men.

“In the second half, we started with a more attacking style… after the red card, the course of the game changed completely. We could have achieved a better result, but we did not have enough focus to win,” he explained.

Looking ahead to the decisive clash with Egypt, Taremi stressed that the key to Iran’s success lies beyond tactics and individual performances, pointing instead to collective unity as the driving force behind their campaign.

“The matter has now become extremely important, and the most important factor for qualification is the unity and solidarity between the players, the coaching staff, and the Iranian people all over the world,” he said. “We have established this solidarity through football, and the greatest joy of qualifying is the increasing closeness of our people.”

He acknowledged that while qualification remains within reach, the pressure on younger players is significant, particularly in a demanding tournament schedule that has tested teams physically and mentally.

“The promotion has not yet been achieved, and this may affect the football careers of many young Iranian players, but for me, unity and solidarity is more important than anything else,” Taremi added.

The striker also highlighted the logistical and physical challenges of the tournament, noting the strain of long-distance travel across multiple host countries and the limited recovery time between matches.

“These circumstances are extremely difficult from both a technical and professional standpoint… such travel reduces recovery time and increases the pressure on the players’ bodies,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Taremi insisted that Iran remain fully focused on delivering a strong performance against Egypt, describing the fixture as an opportunity to bring joy to supporters back home.

“Our duty is to make the Iranian people happy. All our focus is on this matter,” he said. “I hope we win the match against Egypt and achieve qualification for the next round.”

With qualification hanging in the balance, Iran’s showdown with Egypt is set to be a decisive moment in Group G, as Taremi and his teammates aim to turn unity and resilience into a place in the knockout stage.
