Ilgiz Tantashev to Referee Algeria vs Austria at World Cup 2026

FIFA has appointed Uzbek referee Ilgiz Tantashev to officiate Algeria’s crucial final Group J match against Austria, with both nations still fighting to secure a place in the World Cup round of 32.

The match is scheduled to take place on 28 June and carries significant importance for both teams. Algeria and Austria head into the encounter with identical records of one win and one defeat, leaving qualification hopes firmly on the line.

With so much at stake, FIFA has handed responsibility for the fixture to one of Asia’s most experienced match officials. Tantashev, 42, has built a strong reputation on the international stage through his work across several major competitions.

The Uzbek referee has overseen matches in the Saudi Pro League, the AFC Champions League and the Olympic Games, gaining valuable experience in high-pressure environments.

Among the notable fixtures on his résumé is the final between Al Ahli and Machida Zelvia, which ended in a 1-0 victory for Riyad Mahrez and his teammates.

Although he has extensive experience at club and international level, the 2026 tournament marks Tantashev’s first World Cup appearance. He made his debut earlier in the competition during Morocco’s 1-0 victory over Scotland in the group stage.

That match was managed without major controversy, with the referee issuing only two yellow cards throughout the contest.

His overall career statistics underline his firm approach to officiating. Across his professional career, Tantashev has shown 1,256 yellow cards and 33 red cards, reflecting a style that combines authority with consistency.

FIFA has also confirmed the rest of the officiating team for the Algeria-Austria encounter. Fellow Uzbeks Andrey Tsapenko and Timur Gaynullin will serve as assistant referees on the touchlines.

Mexican official Katia Garcia has been appointed fourth official, while Sandra Ramirez will take on the role of reserve assistant referee.

With qualification hanging in the balance, both Algeria and Austria will be hoping the focus remains on the football as they battle for a place in the knockout rounds.

The appointment of an experienced officiating team is expected to help ensure that one of Group J’s most important matches is decided by the players on the pitch.
