Cameroonian teenager Oscar Etoundi moves closer to Montpellier contract
Cameroon youth international Oscar Etoundi is edging closer to a move to Montpellier, with the French club reportedly preparing to welcome the 17-year-old defender as part of its long-term development plans.
The highly-rated prospect, who currently plays for the Douala Football Academy, is expected to leave Cameroon in September to continue his football education in France.
According to available information, Montpellier Hérault Sport Club are working towards integrating the young defender into their system, with the intention of offering him his first professional contract once he reaches the age required to sign such a deal.
Although the move appears to be progressing, the transfer has not yet been fully completed. Administrative formalities still need to be finalised before the operation can be officially concluded.
The situation is therefore being monitored closely by all parties involved.
Etoundi has already attracted attention through his performances at youth level. The defender represented Cameroon at the 2025 U17 Africa Cup of Nations, where he continued to build his reputation as one of the country’s promising young talents.
He is regarded as a modern full-back, recognised for his speed, attacking contributions and ability to deliver quality crosses from wide areas.
His potential arrival at Montpellier would further strengthen the relationship between the French club and the Douala Football Academy.
The academy was founded by former Cameroon international Henri Bedimo, who enjoyed a successful spell at Montpellier and was part of the club’s historic Ligue 1 title-winning squad in 2012.
Through this partnership, Montpellier has established a pathway for young Cameroonian players seeking opportunities in European football.
However, previous experiences suggest caution remains necessary. Reports indicate that administrative difficulties had earlier complicated the arrival of another young Cameroonian prospect, Glenn Ngosso, highlighting the importance of completing all formal procedures before any move can be confirmed.
Etoundi may not be the only player making the journey. Two additional talents from the Douala Football Academy are reportedly expected to join Montpellier’s youth setup in the coming weeks.
Should the transfer be completed, Etoundi would follow in the footsteps of several fellow Cameroonians who have passed through Montpellier’s ranks, including Frédéric Miyenga, Claude Eboumbou Dipoko, Glenn Ngosso, Wilfried Ndollo Bille, Yvan Djemba Mbappé, Bahel Moussongo, Claude Epée Ngando and goalkeeper Kevin Kamdem, who recently signed a professional contract with the club.
For the young defender, the move would represent an important step in a career that continues to gather momentum.
