World Cup 2026: Trezeguet credits Hossam Hassan as Egypt rally past New Zealand

Egypt winger Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” has praised head coach Hossam Hassan for inspiring the Pharaohs’ impressive 3-1 comeback victory over New Zealand in their 2026 World Cup group match.

Speaking after the game, Trezeguet said the team’s turnaround was driven by clear tactical instructions from the coach.

“We followed the instructions of coach Hossam Hassan and managed to come back into the game,” Trezeguet told a television programme after the match.

Egypt recovered from an early setback to secure a landmark first-ever World Cup win, boosting their push for a place in the knockout stage.

Goals from Mostafa Ziko, Mohamed Salah and Trezeguet sealed a spirited second-half response, overturning the deficit and energising the North African side’s campaign.

“I am proud to have scored and made Egyptian supporters happy. This victory helps make our task of reaching the next round easier,” Trezeguet said.

The Pharaohs began their tournament with a 1-1 draw against Belgium before following up with victory over New Zealand.

Egypt now lead Group G with four points, two clear of Iran and Belgium, who played out a goalless draw earlier on Monday. New Zealand sit bottom of the standings with one point.
