World Cup 2026: Pape Thiaw confirms contract situation resolved as Senegal focus on Norway clash

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has confirmed that his contract situation with the Senegalese Football Federation has been resolved, insisting that the Lions of Teranga are fully focused on their decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup Group stage encounter against Norway.

Speaking ahead of the crucial fixture, Thiaw acknowledged the existence of internal issues within the camp but stressed that they would not distract the team from their immediate objective of securing victory.

“It’s true there are some internal issues, but everyone — players, staff, Federation, and myself — are focused on tomorrow’s match, which is the most important thing,” Thiaw told reporters.

The Senegal coach also addressed speculation surrounding his contractual status, revealing that the matter had been settled and clarifying that the disagreement had never been financially motivated.

“Yes, the contract is settled. It was never about money, but about principle and respect,” he added.

Reports in recent weeks had suggested uncertainty surrounding Thiaw’s contractual arrangements with the Senegalese Football Federation, raising concerns about possible unrest within the national team setup during the World Cup. However, the former Senegal international disclosed that he has been working for several weeks under a valid agreement, effectively putting an end to questions over his future.

The timing of Thiaw’s comments comes at a critical stage of Senegal’s World Cup campaign. The African giants began their tournament with a disappointing 3-1 defeat to France, leaving them under pressure heading into their second Group match.

A defeat against Norway could significantly damage Senegal’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages, making the encounter a must-win fixture for the Lions of Teranga.

Despite the off-field distractions, Thiaw remains determined to keep the squad united and concentrated on the task at hand as Senegal seek to revive their campaign.

With no room for further slip-ups, the Teranga Lions will be hoping to put aside any lingering off-field concerns and deliver a response on the pitch against Norway as they chase their first victory of the tournament.
