World Cup 2026: Ismael Saibari sets new tournament record with fastest goal against Scotland

Morocco star Ismael Saibari has written his name into the history books after scoring the fastest goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far during the Atlas Lions’ crucial Group C clash against Scotland.

The in-form midfielder needed just 71 seconds to find the net as Morocco made a dream start in a match that could prove decisive in the battle for top spot in the group. Saibari’s strike eclipsed every goal scored in the tournament up to this point and helped Morocco secure a valuable 1-0 victory.

Morocco imposed themselves from the opening whistle, immediately taking control of possession and pinning Scotland back inside their own half. The breakthrough arrived after a slick attacking move orchestrated by Brahim Diaz, whose perfectly weighted pass split the Scottish defence.

Saibari timed his run to perfection before producing a brilliant finish beyond goalkeeper Angus Gunn, sending Moroccan supporters into celebration and stunning the Scottish side. Reuters reported that the goal came after just 71 seconds, while several other match reports recorded it between 70 and 72 seconds, making it comfortably the quickest strike of the tournament to date.

The goal continued Saibari’s outstanding start to the World Cup. The midfielder had already found the net in Morocco’s opening 1-1 draw against Brazil, where he scored with a delicate finish after being released by another superb pass from Diaz.

In doing so, Saibari surpassed a notable Moroccan milestone previously held by former captain Hakim Ziyech. Ziyech’s goal against Canada at the 2022 World Cup had been one of the fastest scored by a player at the tournament, but Saibari’s lightning strike against Scotland now stands as Morocco’s quickest World Cup goal.

The early breakthrough proved decisive as Morocco controlled large periods of the match, restricting Scotland’s attacking opportunities and maintaining their grip on first place in Group C. The victory moved the Atlas Lions onto four points from two matches and strengthened their chances of advancing to the knockout rounds.

While Saibari’s goal is now the fastest of the 2026 tournament, it remains some way short of the all-time World Cup record. That mark is still held by Hakan Şükür, who famously scored after just 10.8 seconds for Turkey against South Korea at the 2002 World Cup.

For now, however, Saibari’s stunning start against Scotland stands as one of the defining moments of World Cup 2026 and further highlights his growing importance to Morocco’s ambitions on the global stage.
