Head coach of South Africa, Hugo Broos, says he is proud of his team after they secured their first point at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Czech Republic.

The result marked an important response from Bafana Bafana after their opening setback against Mexico, with Broos praising the team’s intensity, attacking intent, and overall aggression throughout the contest.

“I think I’m very proud of my team,” Broos said. “We play good football, we are aggressive, and we create chances.”

South Africa were forced to come from behind after conceding the opening goal, but they showed resilience in the second half. Their persistence was rewarded when Teboho Mokoena calmly converted from the penalty spot to restore parity and secure a valuable point.

Broos admitted that an early mistake disrupted his side’s rhythm and allowed the Czech Republic to take control in the opening stages, but he insisted the overall performance showed clear signs of progress and improvement within the squad.

“There was a mistake and we were surprised at the start,” he added. “It’s a pity, but again I’m very proud of the performance.”

The Belgian tactician also noted that the match highlighted the physical strength of the Czech side, who posed constant problems with their direct style of play and aerial presence. Despite that, he felt his players handled the pressure well and competed strongly across the pitch.

With the draw earning South Africa their first point of the tournament, attention now shifts to their final Group A fixture against South Korea next Thursday. Broos stressed that qualification hopes will depend on that match, urging his players to prepare for another demanding challenge as they aim to progress beyond the group stage.
