Ibrahima Konaté set to join Real Madrid

Real Madrid have completed the signing of Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool, bringing the French centre-back to the Santiago Bernabeu on a four-year deal once his contract at Anfield expires.

Los Blancos confirmed the agreement on Thursday, with the club stating that both parties had “reached an agreement for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next four seasons, until June 30, 2030,” marking another major addition in their ongoing squad rebuild.

Konate, 27, leaves Liverpool after a significant spell in the Premier League, having joined the Merseyside club in 2021 from RB Leipzig. During his time at Anfield, he made 183 appearances and played a key role in their domestic success, including winning the Premier League in 2025 and the FA Cup in 2022.

Liverpool departure ends successful Anfield spell

The French defender developed into a consistent presence at the heart of Liverpool’s defence, forming part of a side that challenged for major honours across multiple seasons. His departure continues a period of transition for the club as they reshape their squad following several high-profile exits and incoming changes.

Konate’s move had been anticipated as he entered the final phase of his contract, with Real Madrid moving decisively to secure his services ahead of rival European interest. His experience at the top level of English and European football is expected to strengthen a Madrid back line undergoing structural change.

World Cup stage and Madrid rebuild ambitions

Currently away with France at the World Cup, Konate joins Real Madrid at a time when the Spanish giants are aggressively reshaping their squad after consecutive seasons without a major trophy.

The club has already been active in the transfer market, appointing Jose Mourinho as coach and adding Spain left-back Marc Cucurella alongside Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva as part of a wider rebuild strategy.

Further reinforcement is still being considered, with Real Madrid linked to Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries as they look to add depth and versatility across the squad.

Defensive reshuffle at the Bernabeu

Real Madrid’s defensive structure has also undergone notable changes in recent seasons. The club recently extended Antonio Rudiger’s contract until 2027, ensuring continuity at centre-back amid wider turnover.

At the same time, departures of Dani Carvajal and David Alaba at the end of their contracts have accelerated the need for renewal across the back line.

Konate’s arrival is seen as part of that long-term planning, with the club aiming to restore defensive stability while maintaining its competitiveness at the highest level of European football.
