Arthur Zwane welcomes selection ‘headache’ as stronger AmaZulu squad makes its mark

Arthur Zwane says the improved quality within his AmaZulu squad has created a welcome selection problem after Usuthu began their Betway Premiership campaign with a 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch.

AmaZulu secured the win at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Saturday, and Zwane believes the club has made important progress since last season after strengthening several key areas during the transfer window.

The AmaZulu coach said the greater depth at his disposal had made choosing a starting line-up more difficult, while also giving the team a stronger bench and more options during matches.

“I’m beginning to have a little bit of a headache in terms of team selection. Last season, it was obvious,” said Zwane.

The former starting selection, according to Zwane, was often easier to identify last season. But the additions made during the current transfer window have increased competition throughout the squad and provided him with players capable of changing the course of a game after coming on.

“This season, we obviously added a bit of quality and competition to the team, which is good for the club. I was just looking at the bench, [the substitutes] we call them game changers.

“At the hotel, we were announcing, starting at 11, that the guys that were going to start on the bench, are game changers. When they come in, we know the positive impact that they need to inject into the squad, into the team, in order for us to get those points.”

Zwane said the players who were not selected to start had shown during pre-season that they were capable of making a case for inclusion. He acknowledged that the decision over who should begin the match was particularly difficult because of the effort and quality displayed across the group.

“I even said to them, I didn’t even know who to start. All of you deserve to start because, even in the pre-season, you were working very well. You worked very hard and we all deserve to start.

“At the end of the day, as a coach, I needed to look at the players that are showing signs of understanding our technical approach, tactical understanding, and the chemistry as well was very, very key.”

Despite the increased competition, Zwane opted against making significant changes to the side that finished last season. He said continuity remained important as AmaZulu looked to build on their previous work, while senior players continued to guide the younger members of the squad.

“So, we couldn’t change the team a lot. We needed to continue where we left off last season, with the seniors leading the young ones.”

The victory over Stellenbosch gave AmaZulu a winning start to their Betway Premiership campaign. For Zwane, however, the result also highlighted the progress made within the squad, with substitutes now offering the kind of impact that can provide greater tactical flexibility during matches.

The competition for places is therefore set to remain a central feature of AmaZulu’s season, with Zwane having to balance continuity, tactical understanding and team chemistry against the demands of a deeper squad.
