World Cup 2026: Istvan Kovacs appointed to officiate Tunisia’s crucial clash with Japan
Tunisia’s decisive World Cup meeting with Japan will be officiated by Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs after FIFA confirmed the appointment ahead of the second round of group-stage fixtures.
The match carries significant importance for both nations as they seek to strengthen their positions in the race for a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup.
Japan enter the encounter with confidence after securing an impressive 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in their opening match. The Asian side demonstrated resilience and attacking quality in a result that boosted their hopes of advancing from the group.
Tunisia, meanwhile, face a far greater challenge after suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening fixture. The result left the Carthage Eagles under pressure heading into their second match, making a positive response against Japan essential to their qualification ambitions.
Despite their contrasting starts to the tournament, both teams remain firmly in contention, and the outcome of the contest could have a major influence on the standings heading into the final round of group matches.
FIFA has entrusted the match to Kovacs, one of Europe’s most experienced officials. The 41-year-old has built a strong reputation across domestic and international football and has officiated more than 600 matches throughout his career.
Although this will not be a World Cup debut as a referee at the tournament’s highest-profile stages, Kovacs is widely recognised for his work in elite European competitions.
His experience includes 37 matches in the UEFA Champions League, among them the 2024-25 final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan.
Beyond European club football, the Romanian official has overseen matches in the Romanian SuperLiga, UEFA Europa League and the Saudi Pro League, establishing himself as one of the continent’s most trusted referees.
His extensive career statistics further underline that experience. Over the course of more than 600 matches, Kovacs has issued in excess of 3,100 yellow cards and 93 red cards while managing games at various levels of competition.
For the Tunisia-Japan encounter, Kovacs will be assisted by fellow Romanians Mihai Marica and Ferencz Tunyogi. Costa Rican official Juan Calderon has been appointed fourth official, while Juan Carlos Mora will serve as reserve assistant referee.
With qualification hopes potentially hanging in the balance, FIFA has assembled an experienced officiating team for a fixture that could prove pivotal in determining which nation moves a step closer to the round of 32.
