Hossam Hassan sets sights on World Cup last 16 as Egypt prepare for Belgium test
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has outlined an ambitious target of reaching the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup, insisting his side are fully focused on advancing from the group phase ahead of their opening clash against Belgium.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference in the United States, Canada and Mexico-hosted tournament, Hassan stressed that qualification remains the primary objective despite the strength of their opponents.
“We have three matches in the group stage and our goal is to qualify,” he said. “I had the honour of facing Belgium as a player and winning, and I want to repeat that with another positive result.”
Hassan expressed confidence in the depth and quality within his squad, hinting that some of his players could emerge as surprise packages during the tournament.
“We have outstanding players and great talent. There are players in this national team who will surprise many people,” he noted.
The Egypt coach also insisted that his side had done extensive tactical preparation for Belgium, underlining belief in their ability to compete at the highest level.
“All respect to the Belgian players, but we have studied them well. We know their strengths and we are capable of delivering a strong performance,” he added.
Hassan praised the work ethic within his technical team, highlighting the contribution of his brother and assistant Ibrahim Hassan, describing him as a key figure in the backroom staff due to his experience and understanding of the game.
He also addressed the importance of captain and star forward Mohamed Salah, describing him as a central influence both on and off the pitch.
“Salah is a major presence in the team. Everyone knows his value and leadership. He had some difficult moments at the last Africa Cup of Nations, but he recovered strongly and returned in excellent form with Liverpool. He will play a positive role at the World Cup,” Hassan said.
The coach also reserved praise for young striker Hamza Abdelkareem, describing him as a promising talent who has been closely monitored and continues to develop rapidly within the national setup.
Hassan concluded by reaffirming that unity and determination within the squad remain strong, with every player committed to achieving positive results and progressing beyond the group stage.
