World Cup 2026: Zinedine Zidane chooses Algeria-Argentina over France-Senegal
French football legend Zinedine Zidane is expected to miss France’s opening World Cup match against Senegal in order to attend Algeria’s meeting with Argentina, with family considerations reportedly influencing his decision.
The former France playmaker is set to be present for Algeria’s Group-stage fixture as his son, Luca Zidane, prepares for what could be his first appearance at a FIFA World Cup for the Desert Foxes.
The scheduling of the two matches has made attending both fixtures extremely difficult. France are due to face Senegal on June 16 at NRG Stadium in Houston, while Algeria take on Argentina later the same day at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
According to reports, the distance between the two venues presents a major logistical challenge. The stadiums are separated by approximately 1,550 kilometres, with flight times of nearly three hours under ideal conditions.
Factoring in travel to and from airports, security procedures and the expected crowds surrounding World Cup venues, attending both matches on the same day is considered highly impractical.
As a result, Zidane has opted to prioritise Algeria’s match, where he could witness a significant moment in his son’s international career.
Luca Zidane spent much of his youth career representing Spanish and French national youth teams before deciding to switch his international allegiance to Algeria, reflecting his paternal family heritage.
The goalkeeper has been part of Vladimir Petkovic’s plans in recent months and could now make his World Cup debut on one of football’s biggest stages.
Should he feature, the occasion would be particularly notable given the calibre of the opposition. Algeria’s opening match comes against an Argentine side led by captain Lionel Messi, offering Luca Zidane the possibility of beginning his World Cup journey against one of the tournament’s strongest teams.
For Zinedine Zidane, the decision underlines the importance of the occasion. While France’s clash with Senegal is one of the headline fixtures of the day, the prospect of supporting his son during a potentially historic moment for Algeria has taken precedence.
The former midfielder has closely followed Luca’s progress since his commitment to Algeria and has monitored his integration into the national team setup under Petkovic.
With the scheduling making attendance at both games virtually impossible, Zidane is expected to be in Miami Gardens, where Algeria and Argentina will meet in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the opening round of the 2026 World Cup.
