Rennes explore Aguerd reunion as Marseille clause deadline approaches

Stade Rennais are exploring the possibility of re-signing Morocco international Nayef Aguerd, although financial constraints and uncertainty over Marseille’s defensive plans could complicate any deal.

According to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna, Rennes have shown strong interest in bringing the defender back to Brittany, three years after he left the club for the Premier League.

No formal agreement has been reached, however, and neither Rennes nor Marseille have confirmed that negotiations are at an advanced stage.

The biggest obstacle is a release clause in Aguerd’s contract that reportedly allows clubs to sign the Moroccan for around $17.2m, provided the entire amount is paid in a single instalment before the clause expires on 31 July.

Once that deadline passes, Marseille would be free to negotiate a higher transfer fee.

Time running out for Rennes

Rennes face a race against time if they hope to secure the services of the 30-year-old under the existing terms.

Aguerd remains under contract with Marseille until June 2030 after joining the club from West Ham United in 2025.

His first campaign in southern France was interrupted by injury problems, limiting him to 25 appearances in all competitions.

Despite those setbacks, Rennes view the experienced centre-back as a player capable of strengthening their defence ahead of the new season.

Marseille defensive uncertainty complicates talks

Marseille’s position could also depend on developments elsewhere in the squad.

Reports suggest that Argentine defender Facundo Medina is attracting interest from Bayer Leverkusen, while captain Leonardo Balerdi has been linked with several clubs in Italy.

The departure of one or both players could force Marseille to reconsider Aguerd’s future, even if the release clause temporarily limits the club’s negotiating power.

Coach Bruno Genesio has previously emphasised the importance of maintaining stability within his squad, while acknowledging that financial realities may require changes before the transfer window closes.

A familiar destination for Morocco star

A return to Rennes would see Aguerd reunite with the club where he established himself as one of the top defenders in French football.

The Morocco international joined Rennes from Dijon in 2020 and went on to make 80 appearances, scoring seven goals before earning a move to West Ham United two years later.

His experience in Ligue 1 and his familiarity with the club make him an attractive option for Rennes, but with the release clause set to expire, the French side may have little time left to complete a deal.
