World Cup 2026: Hugo Broos urges South Africa to stay disciplined ahead of Opener against Mexico

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has stressed the importance of discipline and tactical awareness as Bafana Bafana prepare to begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca on Thursday, June 11.

The Belgian tactician believes his side must remain focused on executing their game plan if they are to stand any chance of securing a positive result against one of the tournament’s most formidable teams on home soil.

Speaking ahead of the Group Stage encounter, Broos revealed that preparations have been centered entirely on Mexico, with the coaching staff working to ensure the players understand their responsibilities both in and out of possession.

“We know what to do against Mexico. We know what to do when they have the ball and when we have possession. The final details will be worked on in our next two training sessions. Everything is focused on this game,” Broos said.

South Africa face a difficult opening test against a Mexican side that will enjoy strong support from the home crowd and enter the tournament with high expectations. However, Broos remains confident that his team can compete if they remain disciplined and committed to their tactical approach.

The 73-year-old coach praised Mexico’s quality, describing them as a complete team with dangerous players across the pitch. He pointed to their movement, unity and collective determination as key strengths that make them one of the toughest opponents in the competition.

“They are all dangerous, they are a very good team with much movement and solidarity. You can see they really want to be world champions,” he noted.

“You can see that with the way they play. We will have to be at our best level if we want to get a result. It is a very complete team.”

With the match set to be played at the historic Estadio Azteca, South Africa are expected to face a hostile atmosphere generated by tens of thousands of Mexican supporters. Broos, however, has urged his players not to be distracted by the occasion or the noise from the stands.

Instead, he wants his side to remain focused on their tactical responsibilities and execute the plans developed during training.

“For us it will be very important to stick to the game-plan and we don’t listen to what is happening in the stands,” he added.

South Africa’s return to the FIFA World Cup has generated significant excitement among supporters, with many hoping the team can make a strong start in a challenging group. A positive result against Mexico would not only boost Bafana Bafana’s chances of progressing to the knockout stages but also provide a major statement on the global stage.

As the countdown to kick-off continues, Broos and his players will spend the final days fine-tuning preparations, knowing that concentration, discipline and adherence to their game plan could prove decisive against one of the tournament’s strongest contenders.
