Orlando Pirates pay emotional tribute to Thabiso Lebitso after Stellenbosch switch
Orlando Pirates have officially bid farewell to defender Thabiso Lebitso following his departure to Stellenbosch FC, bringing an end to a two-year spell marked by commitment, resilience, and memorable moments in a black-and-white shirt.
The Premiership champions confirmed Lebitso’s exit in an emotional statement, describing his time at the club as one defined by effort and dedication, even as injuries disrupted parts of his most recent campaign.
Lebitso, who arrived with high expectations, was one of the standout performers for the “Sea Robbers” during his spell, contributing to a successful period in the club’s recent history. However, persistent injury setbacks limited his availability in what became a challenging season for the full-back.
In their farewell message, Orlando Pirates highlighted the defender’s impact on and off the pitch, while also confirming that his departure forms part of a structured agreement between the two clubs.
“Orlando Pirates Football Club bids farewell to Thabiso Lebitso, who departs the Club after two memorable seasons,” the club said.
The statement further revealed that Lebitso’s exit is linked to a player exchange deal that sees Pirates secure the services of midfielder Mthetheli Mthiyane from Stellenbosch FC.
Reflecting on his contributions, the club recalled some of Lebitso’s most iconic moments in a Pirates jersey, most notably his goal in the thrilling 3-2 victory over rivals Kaizer Chiefs in a packed FNB Stadium during the 2024 Soweto Derby. The strike has since been widely remembered as one of the standout goals in recent derby history.
“Lebitso’s departure comes as part of the agreement that sees Orlando Pirates secure the services of midfielder Mthetheli Mthiyane from Stellenbosch FC,” the club added.
They also praised his relentless work ethic, stating that his commitment set him apart in a highly competitive squad filled with top talent.
“In summarising Thabiso Lebitso’s time with the Mighty Buccaneers, it has been defined by one very important quality – effort. There is no 70%, 80% or 90% when it comes to Lebitso – it’s all in or nothing,” the statement read.
The club concluded by thanking the defender for his service and wishing him success in the next chapter of his career at Stellenbosch FC.
Lebitso now begins a new journey in the Cape Winelands, where he will look to rediscover consistency and continue his development in a different environment, while Orlando Pirates reshape their squad ahead of the new season.
