O’Neill keeps Kelechi Iheanacho decision on hold as striker hits form

Interim Celtic boss Martin O’Neill has revealed that the club has yet to reach a verdict on the future of Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho, despite the striker’s recent resurgence at a decisive stage of the campaign.

Iheanacho, who arrived at Celtic FC on a free transfer following his departure from Sevilla FC last summer, has endured a disrupted spell in Glasgow, with injuries limiting his consistency and impact for much of the season.

However, signs of a turnaround are beginning to emerge just as Celtic push toward their end-of-season objectives.

The 29-year-old forward delivered a timely reminder of his quality on Sunday, coming off the bench to net a late winner in a 2-1 victory over Hibernian FC at Easter Road. It was a contribution that not only secured three crucial points but also strengthened his case for a longer stay at the club.

Despite the growing momentum, O’Neill made it clear that discussions over Iheanacho’s future are not imminent, with the immediate priority centred on the player’s physical condition and ability to maintain fitness levels.

“That’s a conversation for another day. Right now, his fitness is the most important thing, and he has to keep proving that he’s fit on the field,” O’Neill told reporters.

“What he’s done for us has been terrific, especially recently. The club will weigh up his overall contribution against his injuries over the whole season.

“Although he says he’s very young, time does catch up with players—though I think he’s only 29 or 30. If the club keeps him, he would benefit greatly from a proper three or four-week pre-season.”
