Romelu Lukaku closes in on Napoli return to boost Belgium’s World Cup hopes
Romelu Lukaku is edging closer to a return at Napoli, offering a timely lift to Belgium’s preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup after weeks of uncertainty surrounding his fitness.
The 32-year-old striker is expected back at the Serie A club on Monday following an extended recovery period in Belgium, where he spent five weeks managing persistent hamstring and hip issues. His absence had raised concerns over his availability for the tournament, given his importance as Belgium’s all-time leading scorer.
Lukaku’s rehabilitation period was not without controversy. Napoli sanctioned the forward after he failed to report back following the March international break, choosing instead to continue treatment in Belgium under the supervision of his preferred physiotherapist.
The club reportedly imposed a 20 percent salary deduction, although he briefly returned to Italy in April before being allowed to resume recovery abroad.
The situation also strained relations with head coach Antonio Conte, who publicly expressed disappointment over the lack of communication. “I didn’t have a chance to talk to him,” Conte said. “I know that one of our directors did.
“Lukaku came to the training centre. My office is there, but no one knocked on my door. That really hurt me. I expected a greeting, a message or something like that.
“In these kinds of situations, the coach tries to understand everyone, but no one really makes an effort to understand the coach. I hadn’t expected this situation.”
Despite the off-field tension, Lukaku’s imminent return is a positive development for both club and country. Napoli, currently second in Serie A, have three matches remaining as they push to finish the season strongly.
For Belgium, Lukaku’s recovery could prove decisive. With 89 goals in 124 appearances, his presence adds experience and cutting edge to a side drawn alongside Egypt, Iran and New Zealand in Group G.
