Abdoulie Ceesay nets first Bundesliga goal for St. Pauli in defeat to Mainz
Gambian striker Abdoulie Ceesay marked a personal milestone after scoring his first Bundesliga goal, even as FC St. Pauli fell to defeat against Mainz 05.
The 22-year-old striker made an immediate impact after coming off the bench, finding the back of the net to register his maiden goal in Germany’s top flight. Despite the disappointing result, the moment stood out as a positive for the young forward.
“I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. It feels good, even though we lost,” Ceesay said after the final whistle.
His performance, however, could have been even more decisive. Late in the game, he found himself in a promising position with a clear sight of goal but opted to pass instead of taking the shot.
“I could have shot, but I saw my teammate and decided to play the ball to him,” he explained.
Despite the missed opportunity, Ceesay earned praise from his coach, who highlighted the striker’s work rate and determination. The manager pointed to his relentless effort on the pitch, stressing that his attitude remains valuable for the team during a difficult run of results.
“After these defeats, we have to think about it. Maybe it will do us good. No matter what happens, he’ll chase every ball,” the coach said.
While the result was another setback for St. Pauli, Ceesay’s breakthrough moment offers a glimpse of promise as he continues to grow in the Bundesliga.
