Nigeria’s Falconets took a decisive step towards another appearance at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after securing a 2-0 victory over Malawi women’s national under-20 football team in the first leg of their final qualifying tie.

Playing at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne on Saturday, the Nigerian side asserted early dominance as they looked to preserve their flawless record in the competition’s qualification history.

Their control, however, did not immediately translate into goals, with a disciplined Malawian defence holding firm throughout a goalless first half.

The deadlock was broken moments after the restart in unfortunate circumstances for the visitors. Maureen Kenneth turned the ball into her own net in the 46th minute while attempting to deal with a dangerous delivery, handing Nigeria a deserved lead.

Buoyed by the breakthrough, the Falconets continued to press and were rewarded again in the 57th minute. Kindness Ifeanyi rose highest in the box to power home a header, doubling the advantage and putting the hosts in firm control of the tie.

The result leaves Nigeria well positioned ahead of the return leg, where they will aim to complete the job and extend their consistent presence on the global stage. Their pedigree in the competition, including multiple final appearances, remains a driving force behind their campaign.

Malawi, however, have already shown resilience in this qualifying series. They overturned a 1-1 first-leg draw against Guinea-Bissau with an emphatic 5-1 win at home to reach this stage, underlining their capacity to respond under pressure.

The second leg is scheduled for next weekend at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, where Nigeria will look to finish the task and confirm their place at the tournament.
