FIFA confirms 2027 AFCON dates amid hosting concerns

FIFA has moved to clear the air surrounding the future of the Africa Cup of Nations 2027, officially confirming that the competition will go ahead as scheduled despite growing speculation about a possible postponement.

Rumours had recently suggested that the tournament could be pushed to 2028 due to logistical and infrastructure concerns. However, FIFA has now confirmed that the competition will take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027, bringing an end to the uncertainty.

The decision was finalised during a FIFA Council meeting held in Vancouver, on the sidelines of the federation’s annual conference. The confirmation provides clarity for stakeholders, even as questions remain about the readiness of the host nations.

The tournament is set to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, marking the first time three countries will co-host the AFCON. The hosting rights were originally awarded by the Confederation of African Football on April 7, 2023, in what was seen as a bold move to expand the tournament’s footprint in East Africa.

Despite the historic nature of the decision, concerns continue to mount over delays in infrastructure development across the three nations. These challenges have fueled discussions within African football circles about the feasibility of meeting the tournament deadline.

Reports indicate that an alternative plan is being quietly considered, with South Africa emerging as a potential backup host. Such a move would allow more time for the original hosts to complete their projects, while also raising the possibility of shifting the tournament to 2028.

However, CAF has publicly downplayed these concerns. In a recent interview, media officer Luxolo Sepe insisted that there are no plans to relocate the tournament, emphasising that the 2027 edition represents a strategic opportunity to grow the game in new markets across East Africa.

In a related announcement, FIFA also confirmed the dates for other major continental competitions. The AFC Asian Cup will run from January 7 to February 5, 2027, while the CONCACAF Gold Cup is scheduled between June 19 and July 11, 2027.

While FIFA’s confirmation brings stability to the tournament calendar, the spotlight will now shift to preparations on the ground. With time ticking, the success of AFCON 2027 will depend heavily on whether the host nations can deliver on their ambitious plans.
