AEK Athens are being linked with a move for Baltika centre-back Nathan Gassama as the defender’s future in Russia comes under scrutiny.

The 25-year-old, who holds both Malian and French nationality, is currently on the books at Baltika Kaliningrad in the Russian Premier Liga but has emerged as a reported target for the Greek Super League 1 side. The speculation comes amid uncertainty over his contract situation, with no expiry date listed, raising the possibility that he could become a free agent if his deal has quietly run down or is allowed to lapse.

Gassama, a left-footed central defender standing at 1.92m, is valued at €1.50m on Transfermarkt, a figure which would make him a comparatively low-cost option for AEK should a transfer fee be required. The latest rumour, dated 26 April 2026, lists the probability of a move as “?”, underlining that talks – if any – are at a very early and unconfirmed stage.

Born in Évry on 5 January 2001, Gassama has built his reputation at Baltika, where he wears the number 4 shirt and has established himself in the heart of defence. Featuring in the Russian top flight has given him regular exposure to a physically demanding league, with his height and left-footed profile marking him out as a useful option in a back four or the left side of a back three.

Recent outings for Baltika in the Premier Liga have kept him in the shop window, with his performances closely monitored as clubs scan the market for value at the back. While no concrete bid from AEK Athens has been reported, the Greek side’s interest aligns with a wider trend of Super League clubs moving for relatively young, affordable defenders from Eastern Europe.

With his dual-nationality background and room to grow, a switch to Athens – whether via a transfer or potentially as a free agent if his contract has expired – could represent a significant next step, offering Gassama a platform in European competition and a chance to elevate both his profile and market value.
